Week 3A

In My Girl the movie, Vada (the main character), has a life of which she is finding her identity.  A friend of Vada, Thomas J, tries to help Vada find her self identity. Thomas J. also had problems with being different (looked different and was smart), this caused him to be bullied at school. They become best friends, they hang out together by going on adventures, bike riding and playing to fill up their afternoons. In the movie, Vada's father (Harry Sultenfuss) a widow, ignores her daughter it is only when his girlfriend/wife (throughout the movie) tells him to stop ignoring her and talk. When Thomas J. dies, Vada experiences loss/grief for the second time, the first losing her mother. Her first react was denial followed by her staying in her room for days to grieve. She cried for a couple of days and distanced herself from everybody and doesn't feel hungary. When Vada starts to understand what has happened, she comes out of her room and goes to the funeral. She also cries there too, acting as if he were real. She soon starts talking to people about it. To help Vada get over the grief, she wrote a poem for the writing class and read it out.

What Vada gets out from her experiences are mixed. At first she didn't like the idea of her Dad getting married and then got used to it and like her step-mother. She also became friends with another girl and rode bikes around to fill up the afternoon this means that Vada learnt move on without Thomas J. Last, she repairs her relationship with her Dad and spends more time with him.
